A country chronicle tale by Emily Foster, issued in 1890 by the Manchester firm Brook & Chrystal for general family reading. The illustrations are engraved chapter headpieces: small circular vignettes of herons, ducks and other waterbirds in marsh landscapes, each set in a symmetrical frame of sunflowers, fuchsias or grass heads, usable as ornaments, rules and roundel borders.
