A German picture-book of 1858 gathering 100 steel engravings of Italian views and peasant costume, cut after paintings by Franz Catel, Bartolomeo Pinelli, Theodor Weller, Gotzlf and others, issued without text for buyers who wanted the scenery of Italy on the page. The plates are wide, finely ruled landscapes with pale skies and dark foreground trees, ruined colonnades and lakeside towns in the middle distance, and small groups of figures with donkeys and baskets placed on banks and terraces; useful for engraved sky gradients, silhouetted classical ruins, and staffage figures.
