LORY, Gabriel - the Elder, LORY, Gabriel - the Younger, SHOBERL, Frederick. · 1820 · R. Ackermann · 37 pictures

A picturesque travel account of the Simplon road from Geneva to Milan, published by Rudolph Ackermann in London in 1820, with text by Frederic Shoberl and thirty-six hand-coloured aquatint views after designs by Gabriel Lory the Elder and Younger, aimed at British travellers and armchair tourists. The plates show Alpine gorges, galleries cut through rock, bridges, waterfalls and villages under pale washed skies, useful for soft graded colour, layered mountain silhouettes and small figures set against engineering works.
