A popular history of seventeenth-century French society and letters by Charles Gidel, issued in a corrected edition in 1893 for French general and school readers. Wood-engraved plates and text cuts give portraits of writers such as Boileau in periwig and drapery, plus crowd scenes of courtiers in garden walks, church interiors and seated salon gatherings, useful for period costume, interiors and figure groupings.
