The Carewes: a tale of the Civil Wars. With twenty-four illustrations by B. Foster
A historical novel of the English Civil War by Mary Gillies, published in London in 1861 for family and juvenile readers, with twenty-four wood-engraved illustrations after Myles Birket Foster. The plates are small interior scenes of Cavalier-era households and assemblies, figures in ruffs and doublets grouped around tables, reading letters or hearing testimony, with dogs asleep in the foreground and arched windows behind; several are printed in flat green and yellow tints usable as ready-made period vignettes.
