The vicar of Wakefield ... With a memoir of Goldsmith, by Professor Masson
An 1888 London edition of Oliver Goldsmith's 1766 novel The Vicar of Wakefield, illustrated by William Mulready and prefaced with a memoir by Professor David Masson, issued for general Victorian readers. The 33 wood-engraved plates stage clustered family groups in bedrooms, parlours and a prison, each set in soft grey tone with a quoted line of dialogue beneath, giving designers crowded figure compositions, eighteenth-century dress and caption-and-image layouts.
