The Mysteries of the Court of Denmark ... Illustrated
A sensation novel of court intrigue published in London in 1863 under the pseudonym "Lady Charlotte Gordon," issued in cheap illustrated parts for a mass readership. The wood engravings are captioned melodramatic tableaux — a knife raised over a fallen woman, a strangling under a street lamp, a candle-lit doorway trap — drawn with heavy outlines, strong black-and-white contrast and figures cut against blank or shadowed grounds, useful for crime and thriller imagery, silhouetted gesture studies and period costume.
