A collection of legends from medieval Christian and Jewish sources retold in verse by the folklorist and clergyman Sabine Baring-Gould, issued in this edition in 1898 for British general readers. The plates here are small printer's ornaments: symmetrical foliate headpieces with radiating spray and a central blossom, and circular vignettes framing a squirrel in leaves and a bearded seated figure on a scrolled cartouche with a grotesque mask below.
