Sketches in London ... Third edition
James Grant's Sketches in London, a reporter's survey of the city's prisons, workhouses, police courts, penny theatres and drinking rooms, issued in a third edition by William Tegg in 1850 for a general reading public. The plates, etched in the manner of Phiz, pack crowds of top-hatted men, ragged boys and shawled women into lamp-lit interiors and pedimented doorways, giving designers dense figure groups, gesture-heavy crowd scenes and vignettes with soft open edges that drop easily onto a page.
