A boys' adventure novel by John Percy Groves, published in London by Griffith, Farran & Co. in 1886, following a subaltern of the 95th through the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny, illustrated throughout by W. Pearce. The plates are captioned wood-engraved fight scenes — men grappling on the ground, mounted officers, crowds held back at gunpoint — set against open landscape, while the text pages carry small line vignettes: a bearded head in a foliate roundel, wheat ears and thistle stems.
