A popular history of England written by François Guizot for his grandchildren and edited by his daughter Henriette de Witt, published in Paris in 1877 with over a hundred wood-engraved illustrations. The plates stage historical episodes as crowd scenes and interiors: Strafford led through jeering onlookers, Pitt collapsing in the Commons, scaffolds, plumed hats, pikes and half-timbered streets, with captions set beneath.
