The wood-engraved plates are loosely hatched narrative scenes of court audiences, scaffolds, and crowded streets, heavy on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century dress—cloaks, ruffs, plumed hats, pikes—with pale open backgrounds useful for cutouts and figure studies.
