A French translation by Ferdinand de Lanoye of Isaac Israel Hayes's account of his 1860-61 Arctic voyage in search of an open polar sea, published in Paris in 1868 with seventy wood engravings for general readers. The plates are horizontal landscapes printed sideways on the page: dark rock foregrounds, flat ice plains, distant glacier walls and cloud banks, with small figures, sledges, dog teams and a schooner giving scale — useful for stark tonal horizons, silhouetted coastal rock and small human figures set against emptiness.
