The Life of a Soldier; a narrative and descriptive Poem. With ... Engravings
A narrative and descriptive poem tracing a soldier's career, illustrated by the military artist William Heath and published by William Sams in London in 1823 for a British public still close to the Napoleonic wars. The plates are unshaded outline engravings, printed sideways across the page, showing recruiting and barrack-room groups, massed infantry ranks and cavalry melees with rearing horses, sabres and smoke — usable as pure contour drawing for silhouettes, crowd friezes and line-only figure studies.
