Franz Hernsheim's memoir of trading years in Micronesia, published in Berlin in 1883 with an introduction by the ornithologist Otto Finsch, aimed at German readers following the country's new Pacific commerce. The numbered chromolithograph plates pair captioned figure studies of Marshall Islands and Palau people with wide, pale-toned coastal views of sailing canoes, surf breaks and palm-shaded meeting houses, useful for tropical horizon washes, outrigger silhouettes and gabled thatch architecture.
