Mississippi-Fahrten. Reisebilder aus dem amerikanischen Süden, 1879-1880
Ernst von Hesse-Wartegg's German-language travel account of the American South, based on journeys of 1879–80 and published in Leipzig in 1881 for readers at home curious about the Mississippi valley. The wood-engraved vignettes run small and sideways in the text column: steamboats at levees, St. Louis waterfront under its bridge, cypress swamps with poled skiffs, tiered hillside cemeteries and crowds of figures in loose groups, useful for river craft, terraced landscape, and tonal hatching in small formats.
