Sketch of the scenery of Massachusetts. With plates. From the Geological Report of Prof. Hitchcock
An 1842 offprint of the scenery plates from Edward Hitchcock's geological survey of Massachusetts, issued for readers of the state report and for travellers in the Connecticut valley. Soft-toned lithographic landscape plates — river bends, hazy hill profiles, waterfalls framed by trees — sit alongside small wood-engraved vignettes with rafts, figures and foreground weeds, useful for washed-out atmospheric backdrops and compact scenic ornaments.
