Emil Holub's two-volume German account of his 1883–87 journey from Cape Town to the country of the Mashukulumbe, published in Vienna in 1890 with 205 wood engravings for European readers following colonial-era exploration. The plates are text-width landscape vignettes in fine engraved line: river crossings, grass and reed thickets, village clearings, hunting scenes on the Limpopo, and groups of figures spearing fish, useful for open skies, feathery vegetation textures, and small-scale figure staffage.
