The rural and domestic life of Germany, with characteristic sketches of its cities and scenery, collected in a general tour, and during a residence in the country in 1840, 41 and 42
William Howitt's 1842 London account of German country customs, towns and landscape, written for British readers from his tour and residence there in 1840-42. The wood-engraved chapter headpieces, signed G. F. Sargent, set small figure groups in open air — village graveyards of iron crosses, women washing at a stream, a wayside procession — with pale open skies and hand-lettered chapter titles worked into the scene.
