Coenraad Busken Huet's study of Dutch civilisation in the seventeenth century, issued in an illustrated third edition of 1898 under J. H. W. Unger's supervision for Dutch general readers. The plates are halftone reproductions of old copper engravings: bust portraits of scholars, jurists and princes set in oval cartouches ringed with Latin mottoes, flanked by allegorical women, skulls, hourglasses and inscribed tablets, useful for ornamental frames, lettered plinths and ruffed sitters.
