Jean Ingelow's collected Poems, issued in London in 1867 as an illustrated gift volume for middle-class Victorian readers, with designs by George John Pinwell, Edward John Poynter and others cut on wood by the Brothers Dalziel. The wood engravings put single crinolined women and working men at the edge of rivers, beaches and thickets, built from dense parallel hatching that turns skies, moonlit water and undergrowth into flat grey tone; useful for silhouetted figures, landscape textures and small horizontal headpiece formats.
