A state geological survey report by James Hall and Josiah Dwight Whitney, published in 1858 for Iowa's government and for working geologists and naturalists. The plates are fine outline wood engravings of fossil crinoid and echinoderm plate structures, drawn as flat mosaics of polygonal cells with letter keys, useful as tessellation patterns, rosette motifs, and diagram borrowings.
