Italy from the Alps to Mount Etna ... With ... illustrations
An illustrated travel survey of Italy, published in London by J. S. Virtue & Co. in 1886 for English armchair travellers and tourists, moving region by region from the Alps south to Sicily. The wood engravings are tonal landscape and townscape views — hill towns under cloud, a lake steamer crowded with passengers, San Domenico in Siena above terraced walls, peasants carrying loads past a volcanic cone — with fine cross-hatched skies and full-page plates printed sideways, useful for atmospheric scenery, architectural silhouettes and small figure groups.
