Providence Displayed: or, the remarkable adventures of Alexander Selkirk, who lived four years and four months by himself, on the island of Juan Fernandez ... To which is added a supplement, containing the history of P. Serrano, E. How, and others left in similar situations
Isaac James compiled Providence Displayed in 1800, a British collection of castaway narratives centred on Alexander Selkirk's years alone on Juan Fernandez, with added accounts of Pedro Serrano and others, aimed at general and juvenile readers. Small letterpress woodcuts sit inside the text block: rafts and sailing boats on banded water, volcanic peaks, scalloped cloud banks, rayed sunbursts and night campfires under a crescent moon, with figures reduced to stiff silhouettes — useful for coarse-line landscape stamps and maritime vignettes.
