Mór Jókai's popular history of the Hungarian nation told as romantic scenes, issued at Budapest in 1898 as the fifth illustrated edition for a general patriotic readership. The 66 full-page plates are tonal wood engravings and halftones after Hungarian academic painters, showing horsemen and armoured crowds, tribunals, banners, tents and long processions against sketchy landscape, useful for crowd silhouettes, medieval dress and spear-and-banner massing.
