A cheap illustrated miscellany of short readings edited by the London publisher Charles Knight in 1850 for self-educating general readers. Full-page wood engravings, several printed sideways, mix crowded costume and street scenes copied from older prints with soft tonal landscapes, offering designers figure groups, architectural interiors and fine parallel-line hatching for texture and background fills.
