A German picture-book of Rome and the Campagna, published in 1870 with wood engravings cut after sketches by Carl Zimmermann, director of the xylographic workshop of the Leipzig Illustrirte Zeitung, and explanatory text by August Kühne for German readers and travellers. The plates are full-page landscapes printed sideways within ruled borders: aqueduct arches and rock grottoes seen past heavy foreground trees, shepherds and goats, peasants at evening prayer, with fine parallel-line skies and dense crosshatched shadow useful for tonal texture, framed vignettes and ruin silhouettes.
