The Daltons; or, Three Roads in Life. ... With illustrations by Phiz [i.e. H. K. Browne
A three-volume Victorian novel by the Irish writer Charles Lever, published in London in 1852 with etched plates by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), Dickens's illustrator, issued for a serial-reading middle-class public. The plates are fine-line etchings of crowded drawing rooms, staircases and dinner tables, each captioned in engraved script, with comic crowds of figures in frock coats and wide skirts set against hatched interiors — useful for period costume groups, gesture studies and small vignette scenes.
