The Dodd Family Abroad. ... With illustrations by Phiz [i.e. H. K. Browne
Charles Lever's comic novel of an Irish family's grand tour of the Continent, issued in London in 1854 with etched plates by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz") for a middle-class Victorian readership. The plates are fine-line etchings printed sideways on the page, showing crowded hotel parlours, customs sheds, drawing rooms and street mobs full of crinolines, top hats and gesturing figures, useful for period costume groupings, travel-scene staging and loose-hatched crowd texture.
