Jack Hinton, etc
Charles Lever's comic Irish military novel Jack Hinton, reissued in 1893 by the London cheap-reprint house R. E. King for a general Victorian reading public. Twenty-six loosely drawn plates, scratched in soft crayon-like line, show fireside interiors, a crowded moneylender's drawing room, a coach-and-four, and officers lounging in armchairs; useful for gestural crowd groupings and smudged tonal backgrounds.
