The wood-engraved vignettes drop into the text without frames and show massed crowds in bicorne hats and cloaks, lantern-lit arrests, a fencing bout, and a drawing-room gathering; useful for loose crosshatched figure groups, Napoleonic uniforms, and small scenes that sit as islands in a page of type.
