A Weird Region. New Zealand lakes, terraces, geysers and volcanoes. [Illustrated
An 1887 illustrated account of the New Zealand thermal district — the Rotorua lakes, silica terraces, geysers and the volcanoes of the 1886 Tarawera eruption — written by Auckland journalist Thomson W. Leys and published by H. Brett for colonial readers and visiting tourists. The plates are landscape-format wood engravings and tinted lithographs after photographs, printed sideways on the page: panoramic lake views with dead standing timber, Maori village roofs along a shoreline, and township views annotated with numbered keys to mountains and buildings.
