John Chinaman. Description versified by R. L
A children's verse book of 1891, published by Griffith & Farran in London, in which Rowe Lingston set comic rhymes about Chinese life beside full-page colour plates for young readers. The chromolithographs are crowded caricature scenes — acrobats stacked into pyramids, a mandarin carried pick-a-back, bird-shaped kites on long strings, ranks of red parasols and patterned robes — offering flat bright figure groups, dense pattern and period stereotype worth handling with care.
