Shifts and Expedients of Camp Life, Travels, etc
A practical handbook of camp craft and improvised gear by William Barry Lord and the explorer-painter Thomas Baines, published in London in 1876 for colonial travellers, settlers and sportsmen. The 390 wood-engraved figures are small in-text diagrams: spring snares and deadfalls lettered A to D, knots and baited hooks, wheels lashed to a makeshift axle, and boys working set-lines through ice, all drawn in open line on bare paper with cast shadows and tufts of grass.
