Handy Andy, etc
Samuel Lover's comic Irish novel Handy Andy, reissued by Macmillan in London in 1896 with an introduction by Charles Whibley and forty pen drawings by Henry Matthew Brock for late-Victorian general readers. Brock works in dense crosshatched line, staging captioned mishaps — a mounted gentleman scolding labourers by torchlight, soldiers dumping a trumpeter in a ditch, a parlour reading, a crowd recoiling from a small explosion — useful for figure groupings, early-nineteenth-century dress, and vignetted line work that sits open on a page.
