A Book of Old English Ballads. With an accompaniment of decorative drawings by G. W. Edwards, and an introduction by H. W. Mabie
An 1896 Macmillan anthology of traditional English ballads, decorated throughout by the American illustrator George Wharton Edwards with an introduction by Hamilton Wright Mabie, aimed at general readers of the period. The 76 pen drawings are small framed vignettes and headpieces: lovers under trees, cloaked figures on stairs, views through casements, held inside oval cartouches, ruled borders and Art Nouveau scroll corners.
