Sea Pictures, drawn with pen and pencil
Sea Pictures, drawn with pen and pencil is an illustrated survey of the ocean and maritime history by the physician-editor James Macaulay, published in London in 1882 by the Religious Tract Society for family and Sunday-library reading. The full-page wood engravings are tonal and atmospheric: sailing ships heeling in high waves, hulls breaking up on rock ledges, crowded landing boats in surf, wide skies over flat coastlines, often paired with lines of verse as captions.
