George MacDonald's three-volume novel of a doubting English curate, issued in London by Strahan & Co. in 1880 for the Victorian circulating-library reader. The single frontispiece is a pen-and-ink line engraving of a squat church tower above a huddle of gabled cottages and a river, drawn in fine parallel hatching with blank paper standing in for sky and water.
