The Mystery of Marlborough House. A tale of trial and temptation
A penny-fiction historical romance issued by E. Harrison in London in 1866, sold in cheap weekly parts to a mass readership of serial-novel buyers. The 43 wood engravings drop into double-column letterpress and stage costumed confrontations: men in tricorns and cloaks on cobbled streets, women in wide skirts with fans, candlelit interiors with framed portraits and casement windows, offering figure groups, period dress and simple hatched backdrops for cut-out use.
