Frederick Marryat's 1829 naval novel Frank Mildmay, reissued by Macmillan in London in 1897 for general readers, with an introduction by David Hannay and 39 pen-and-ink plates by H. R. Millar. Millar draws in open line with dense diagonal hatching for shadow: shipboard fights below decks, officers standing over fallen men, schoolboys wading in a stream, crowds of onlookers pressed at the edge of the frame; useful for figure groups, period uniform and coat silhouettes, and captioned plate layouts.
