Newton Forster ... With illustrations by E. J. Sullivan, and an introduction by David Hannay
An 1897 Macmillan reissue of Frederick Marryat's 1832 sea novel Newton Forster, with an introduction by David Hannay and forty pen drawings by Edmund Joseph Sullivan, made for late-Victorian readers of cheap illustrated classics. The drawings are loose ink line work with hatched shadows and wide blank margins, showing Regency-dressed figures at dinner tables, in clerks' offices and on tilting ship decks, each set above an italic caption line; useful for figure grouping, interior furniture and caption-and-image layout.
