Peter Simple ... Illustrated by J. A. Symington, with an introduction by D. Hannay
Frederick Marryat's 1834 naval novel Peter Simple reissued by Macmillan in London in 1895, with an introduction by David Hannay and forty plates by J. A. Symington for general Victorian readers of sea fiction. The pen-and-ink drawings stage captioned moments—officers at a mess table, a couple crossing a crowded deck, a street crowd before a gabled house—in fine hatched line with heavy black accents and generous white space, useful for period costume, rigging detail and figure groupings.
