The Phantom Ship ... Illustrated by H. R. Millar. With an introduction by D. Hannay
An 1896 Macmillan edition of Frederick Marryat's nautical supernatural novel The Phantom Ship, with an introduction by David Hannay and forty pen-and-ink plates by H. R. Millar, aimed at late-Victorian readers of adventure fiction. The drawings use dense cross-hatching and open white grounds to show sailors struggling on canted decks, skeleton crews at the wheel, a priest confronting a young woman by a hearth, and bodies pitched into the sea \u2014 useful for rigging, barrels, storm figures and gaunt faces.
