Mrs. Haycock's Chronicles: a story of life-service
A Victorian moral tale of domestic service written by Emma Marshall and published in London in 1877 for family and young readers. The pictures are small wood-engraved chapter initials in which blocky slab-serif letters such as T and F are wrapped in sprays of apple blossom, buds and veined leaves, giving designers ready-made botanical drop caps and letterform ornament.
