Guide, Philosopher, and Friend. [A novel
A three-volume-era Victorian novel by Mary Emma Martin, published in London by Griffith & Farran in 1884 for general circulating-library readers. The plates are horizontal chapter headpieces: narrow banded panels of flat foliage, five-petal blossoms and berries flanking a circular medallion holding a small line scene — sunrise over water with a figure on rocks, a standing churchyard cross, a pair of doves — usable as rules, section dividers and roundel frames.
