A multi-volume survey of Britain's colonies by Robert Montgomery Martin, published in London around 1851 for a general reading and reference public, illustrated with the engraved steel-plate maps issued by John Tallis. The plates pair sparely lettered coastlines and coloured boundary lines with engraved vine-and-scroll borders and inset vignettes of harbours, sailing ships, mountains and local figures, giving designers map frames, cartouche lettering and small landscape medallions that can be lifted away from the geography.
