Histoire de France. Deuxième édition
Jules Michelet's Histoire de France in its second edition, published in Paris in 1876 with wood-engraved illustrations after the Spanish draughtsman Daniel Urrabieta Vierge, aimed at a general French readership following the national narrative. The plates are chapter headpieces showing crowds in narrow streets, armoured riders entering gateways, hooded figures at prison doors and throne-room audiences, drawn with dense hatching and strong contrasts of dark arches against pale sky — useful for silhouetted crowd masses, banner and pike shapes, and framing vignettes with irregular top edges.
