Histoire de France. Deuxième édition
Jules Michelet's narrative history of France, reissued in a second edition in 1876 with chapter headpieces by the Spanish illustrator Daniel Urrabieta Vierge, aimed at general French readers. The wood-engraved vignettes are loose, sketchy scenes set in framed panels above chapter numbers: plumed-hat soldiers grouped in snow, a rider at a town gate, bodies among bare trees, a cliff fort above a fleet, with heavy hatching and open unfinished margins useful as section markers and small narrative spots.
