Life amongst the Modocs: unwritten history
Joaquin Miller's semi-autobiographical account of years spent among the Modoc people of northern California, published in London in 1873 for British readers of frontier narrative. The plates here are line-engraved decorative initials in which outlined Roman capitals stand behind acanthus scrolls, thistle and bud forms, perched birds and small putti raising cups — usable as drop caps, monogram frames, or sources for foliate border motifs.
