The Poetical Works of John Milton, printed from the original editions. With a life of the author by A. Chalmers ... With twelve illustrations by R. Westall
A late Victorian London edition of Milton's poetical works issued by Bickers and Son in 1881, with Alexander Chalmers's life of the poet and twelve plates after Richard Westall, aimed at collectors of reprinted English classics. Alongside the plates run engraved headbands and triangular tailpieces in fine outline: symmetrical acanthus and vine scrolls, tulips and pomegranates, lidded urns, latticed cartouches and paired putti rising from foliage, all usable as rule-bordered banners, chapter closers and corner fills.
